A fashion illustrator and painter is using Customily to turn a creative passion into a business. One of her favorite things is visiting someone years later and finding that they’ve kept a little card or illustration she made for them.

‍“There’s something really special about knowing that something you created has become meaningful enough for someone to hold on to.”

That feeling is the heart of Keepsake Parade, a creative business built around personalized illustrated gifts that celebrate milestones and meaningful moments. Its founder has a background in fashion illustration and painting, and she has always added hand-painted touches to gifts for friends and family.

Now she’s bringing that spirit to her online store, KeepsakeParade.com with Customily as the foundation.

From a heartfelt idea to a scalable one

Her work as a creator had one natural limit: the hours she could personally give to each piece. Having done custom portraits and other commissions, she knew how much communication goes into a personalized artwork. She wanted to share her creativity with more people and give customers more control over the process.

So she began exploring how to combine her own artistic style with technology, aiming for something that feels individually made for each customer while being more accessible and efficient to create.

Finding the right platform

She believes she first came across Customily while exploring options with ChatGPT, and then looked into it through the Shopify App Store. She was researching personalization solutions for Shopify, and Customily caught her attention because it brought so many capabilities together in one platform. What appealed to her most was the chance to build a sophisticated personalization experience without having to build the whole technical system herself.

Her original idea was simple: illustrations customers could personalize with a name or a message. Then the platform got her thinking bigger.

“The tools didn’t just help me execute my original concept. They inspired me to think of products I hadn’t even considered creating.”

The documentation became a source of inspiration as well as instruction. “It’s not just useful for understanding how to set something up; it also helps you discover what you could create in the first place.” Customily’s video examples showed her how many kinds of personalization were possible and made it easy to picture adapting them to her own designs and audience. She’d look at one feature and immediately imagine three or four products she could build with it.

“Instead of feeling restricted by the technical side, I found myself wanting to experiment with more and more ideas.”

The collection: personalized sports portraits

Her first collection is a line of personalized sports portraits, with designs for basketball, volleyball, and soccer and more sports and activities on the way. She sees them as gifts for graduating seniors, college students, athletes, teammates, parents, and families.

Here’s how it works. She starts by developing a master illustration that sets the composition and artistic style. In Customily, she connects the customer’s uploaded photo and personalized text to that design. The customer picks a design, uploads a photo of the person to be illustrated, and adds a name and a short personal message. The AI generation uses her master illustration as the artistic and compositional reference, while the photo supplies the details that personalize the character’s appearance and uniform. The result is a recognizable portrait, a stylized watercolor illustration that keeps the original pose, composition, and style.

Customers can preview the result before ordering. That makes the experience more engaging and helps them feel confident about their purchase. For her, it removes much of the manual back-and-forth that custom artwork usually involves.

“Traditionally, commissioning a custom portrait meant waiting to see the result. Being able to preview the transformation so quickly adds a wonderful element of surprise and discovery.”

The best part for her is what it frees up: more time to create original designs and new collections while the personalization workflow handles the individual variations.

The tools that make it possible

Several Customily capabilities come together in her products:

  • AI image generation, central to the personalized illustration concept
  • Customer photo uploads, background removal, and personalized text
  • Customizable workflows and the live preview experience
  • The Canva integration, which she calls an absolute game changer

She already designs in Canva, so she could bring her existing designs into Customily with their layers available to work with. That saved her an enormous amount of time, which matters a lot for a side business. Anyone who has had to recreate a design across platforms knows how tedious that is. Her takeaway: you don’t have to change the way you design to start offering personalized products.

“When I discovered that integration, it was one of those moments when I thought, ‘Oh, this is going to make my life so much easier!’”

None of these are capabilities she could have developed on her own. As she puts it, Customily “has completely expanded what I can realistically imagine offering as a one-person business.” And she says it feels like the platform was built by people who understand how creative people work: “They’ve anticipated so many of the tools and features you might need, and it really shows.”

Perfecting the experience, step by step

Before launching, the preview and testing tools let her refine both the artwork and the customer journey. She has tried many photographs and prompts, asking the questions a thoughtful creator would. What happens with poor lighting? What if the person is wearing a hat, standing with other people, or looking away from the camera? She has been writing and refining AI prompts so the process handles different photos while keeping the quality and style she wants.

Then came the “Aha!” moment: repeatable results, with different customer photos turning into personalized artwork that kept the composition and style of her original illustration.

She sees this as an extension of her craft. Her experience with traditional custom portraits taught her to make thoughtful use of the reference material a customer provides, and she brings that same care here.

‍“I don’t see AI-assisted illustration as a replacement for traditional artwork. It’s just another creative tool, with its own possibilities and limitations, and one that allows me to explore ideas and continue working on creative projects in a way that fits my life and schedule right now.”

She also enjoys going through the process as a customer would, imagining what it feels like to upload a photo and watch it become a personalized illustration.

A technology partner, not just an app

Her public Shopify review sums up how she feels:

“I genuinely cannot say enough good things about Customily, both the app itself and the team behind it.”

She highlights how much the platform makes possible: building sophisticated personalized products, connecting with external APIs, generating custom imagery, controlling what customers see versus what they ultimately receive, and fine-tuning small details she didn’t know existed when she started.

What impresses her just as much is the support. When she had a particularly complicated setup, Brian, head of the support team, didn’t send a generic help article. He took the time to understand exactly what she was trying to accomplish, worked through the problem with her, found a solution, and even recorded a video so she could repeat the process herself in the future. On an earlier, more code-heavy issue, she securely gave the team access to her Shopify store, and they made the change for her.

“They didn’t leave me trying to decipher code or figure out a technical problem that was beyond what I knew how to do. They took ownership of it and got it done. That level of support is incredibly rare.”

Together with the extensive documentation and learning resources, that support has made her feel well looked after at every step. She also uses AI tools like ChatGPT to research, troubleshoot, and think through approaches, and she calls this a special moment for independent creators, when one person can explore ideas that once might have required an entire team. Learning the platform and building something new has been, in her words, “genuinely a joy.”

For her, choosing software isn’t only about features. She wants to know the company will be there when she’s attempting something complicated, and Customily has shown her that more than once.

“It doesn’t feel like just another Shopify app. It feels like having a technology partner behind your business.”

Her verdict: there may be cheaper or simpler apps, but if personalization is important to your business and you want the flexibility to go beyond the ordinary, Customily is worth it.

More than a portrait

What excites her most goes beyond the illustration. Picture a personalized portrait paired with a heartfelt message from someone you love, or with space for teammates and classmates to add signatures and well wishes. It becomes a reminder of the people who shared that moment with you. She has kept cards with handwritten messages from different stages of her life for years, because of the people who wrote them and the memories attached.

‍“I’d love for Keepsake Parade to help people create more of those moments.”

Her advice for fellow creators

If a personalized product idea feels intimidating, she recommends:

  1. Use the resources available. Customily’s documentation and support team, plus AI tools like ChatGPT, can carry you a long way.
  2. Explore the Canva integration if you already design there.
  3. Start simple. Pick one product with one or two personalization options, then move on to advanced features as your ideas grow.
  4. Give yourself room to experiment. There’s a learning curve, but you don’t have to figure everything out on your own.

What’s next

Her first collection is now live, and she’s already looking ahead. She plans to keep expanding into more milestones, occasions, and meaningful moments, guided by what her customers love most. As she puts it, she has plenty of creative ideas and is just as interested in finding out what people want.

“I honestly feel like I’ve only scratched the surface of what I could do with Customily, and that’s incredibly exciting!”

Your idea deserves a partner like this

Every personalized product starts the same way: with someone who sees a gift, a milestone, or a memory and thinks, “I wish I could make this for more people.” What stands between that spark and a real store is usually the technical side. Keepsake Parade’s founder shows it doesn’t have to be.

She came in with a simple idea and a side-business schedule. With Customily she found AI image generation, photo uploads, live previews, and a Canva integration that let her keep designing the way she already did. When she got stuck, real people helped her through it, sometimes with a step-by-step video, sometimes by making the change for her. The technical groundwork was already there, so she could spend her time on the part she loves: creating.

Whatever you want to make, whether it’s illustrated portraits, custom gifts, or something no one has built yet, you can start the same way she did: with one product and one or two personalization options. Customily’s documentation, live chat with real people, and a team that wants you to succeed will help you take it from there. You don’t have to build the technology or figure it out alone.

As she says, she has only scratched the surface. So have you.
