Personalize your Shopify products
Install for freeSomebody types "Happy Birthday Mom, Love Sarah" into an Amazon listing. On the seller's side, nobody opens a design tool. A print-ready file just shows up, ready for the printer.
Between May and October 2026, that happened 33.9k times through Customily, our product personalizer.
If you've read our Amazon seller's guide to personalized products, you already know why personalized products tend to beat generic ones on Amazon: better margins, fewer returns, less of a price war. This post is the other half of the story. What happens when real sellers actually do it? We pulled the production data, and we're sharing all of it, including the parts that don't go straight up and to the right.
The big picture first
Here's what Customily's production data shows from May to October:
- 33.9k orders placed by Amazon shoppers, each with print-ready files generated automatically.
- 8.3k Amazon listings connected to Customily templates, covering 11.7k ASIN variants.
- 63 Amazon seller accounts connected.
One thing to keep in mind: "connected" means set up, not sold. So let's look at what sellers actually sold.
Two sellers, two very different curves
We picked two sellers from the data (anonymized, of course).
Seller B is the steady climber. 12.2k orders since May 2026, and the number grew every single month: 744 orders in May, 4,454 in August. That's about six times May's volume by August.
Seller A is the sprinter. 17.8k orders since May 2026 across two Amazon stores. Orders peaked at 6,006 in June and now sit at about 3,400 a month.
We won't pretend that second curve is a hockey stick. Order flow moves with products, seasons and ad budgets, and Amazon personalization doesn't change that. But look at what the two sellers have in common: both have run well over 100 personalized orders a day. At that pace, creating each file by hand stops being a workflow and becomes a bottleneck. With automatic print files, nobody has to.

Two ways to use a product personalizer on Amazon (and sellers use both)
Customily, a product customizer built for e-commerce sellers, gives you two ways to sell personalized products on Amazon:
- ‍Pre-purchase. The buyer personalizes right on the listing with Amazon Custom, and Customily turns each order into print-ready files automatically. The buyer never leaves Amazon.
- ‍Post-purchase. The buyer checks out first, then gets a Customily link to personalize after checkout in the full editor, with live preview and all the personalization options Amazon Custom can't offer. Customily generates the print-ready files once they confirm.
So which one do sellers pick? Here's the monthly split of personalized orders:
Pre-purchase led every month, which makes sense. Nothing beats a buyer who never has to leave the listing. But look at the post-purchase column: from 22% of orders in May to 46% in September. Neither model is a niche.
One caution. These are shares of orders, so a few big catalogs can move them. We read this as proof that both models carry real volume, not as a scoreboard.
So how do you choose? Product by product:
- Go with Amazon Custom when the personalization is simple: a name, a date, a short message. Think an engraved keychain.
- Go with post-purchase when the product is visually rich or has lots of options, and your buyer will feel better seeing a live preview. Think a custom portrait or a family print.
Want the full comparison? It's in the guide, and our post on post-purchase personalization on Amazon goes deeper on that model.

If you sell on Shopify, you've done the hard part
You already know which of your products people buy as gifts. You have designs that work and customers who come back. Amazon is one more place for those products to live.
And you don't have to start from zero: Customily connects Shopify and Amazon from a single account, so your designs, products and orders stay in one place instead of being rebuilt for every channel. Here's the full list of supported platforms.
If you sell on Amazon but don't offer personalization yet
You don't have to personalize your whole catalog to find out if it works. Start with two or three products that already sell and that someone might want with a name, a date or a message on them.
Two things to know. Amazon Custom requires a Professional selling plan. And pre-purchase is the lowest-friction way in, since the only thing that changes for your buyer is a few extra fields on the listing. If a product outgrows that, move it to post-purchase and leave the rest alone.

How to sell personalized products on Amazon without disrupting your catalog
- Choose two or three products with gift appeal that already sell in a plain version.
- Connect your Seller Central account to Customily. Start a free trial and follow the authorization flow.
- Build a template for each product: personalization zones, fonts, limits, and the file format your manufacturer needs.
- Pick the model per product. To use Amazon Custom at purchase, enable Connect Amazon Custom Personalization in the product's Customily settings. Leave it off, and buyers get the post-purchase email instead.
- Run a test order end to end before you send any traffic to the listing.
The step-by-step setup lives in our Amazon Custom print file guide.
And if something breaks?
Experienced sellers always ask this one first, so here's the answer: you get a person. Customily support is live chat with real people, not bots, covering almost 24 hours a day across US and Pacific time zones, in several languages. New sellers also get one-on-one training and can join our weekly live classes.
Conclusion: your best-selling gift, with a name on it
The data says the system holds up at volume. Sellers have run over 100 personalized orders a day through automatic print files, and both personalization models are carrying real orders.
What it can't tell you is how your catalog will do. For that you need two or three products, one template and a test order. That's a small experiment, and the first result comes back fast.
So here's the only question left: what does your best-selling gift product look like with a customer's name on it?

Frequently asked questions
What is a product personalizer, and how does it work on Amazon?
A product personalizer lets buyers add a name, date, photo or message to a product, then turns that input into a print-ready file for production. On Amazon, Customily does this either from the inputs buyers enter with Amazon Custom at purchase, or through a post-purchase editor with live preview.
What is Amazon Custom, and how does it relate to Customily?
Amazon Custom is Amazon's native feature for collecting personalization on a listing: buyers submit text, images or dropdown choices before adding to cart. Amazon passes you that raw input but doesn't produce a print-ready file. Customily applies the input to your template and generates the production file automatically.
Do I have to choose one personalization model for my whole catalog?
No. You choose per product, and many sellers use both at the same time on different products.
Do I need an Amazon Professional seller account?
Yes. Amazon Custom is only available on the Professional selling plan.
How long does setup take?
Connecting Customily to Seller Central takes minutes. Templates take longer: a simple one-field template can be ready in under an hour, and a complex one can take a day or more to build and test.
What if a buyer doesn't complete post-purchase personalization?
It happens occasionally, so set up a process for following up before you scale.
Can I keep my current print-on-demand supplier?
Yes. Customily generates the production file and works alongside the suppliers you already use.
