How to sell custom products on BigCommerce.

But, how do you approach it? BigCommerce is one of our favorite eCommerce platforms so we thought on giving you some tips and tricks that will help you master personalized products with it!


BigCommerce is one of the most used platforms worldwide, and it’s getting more popular by the day. It lets merchants create customizable offerings by adding product options with multiple variants so their customers can create the products of their dreams.


Before starting to add products you need to take into consideration how are you planning to sell your custom goods.


From small details such as custom gift wrapping to entirely on-demand products with custom materials and confection, knowing what you will personalize and how is always the first step.


  • What types of customizable products will you sell?

  • What types of options will you offer customers?

  • How will you display the options?

  • How will you display the personalization?

  • How will you fulfill the personalization?


It’s important to remember that the more options you offer to your customers, the more difficult it can be for them to choose what they want. We often recommend limiting the number of available options, and making those options as easy to understand as possible.


Once you've figured this out, the process of adding product options and their variants is pretty easy and doesn't require advanced knowledge of the platform.


To create a new product with options, just follow the steps below:

  • On your BigCommerce admin panel, go to ‘Products’ and hit the ‘Add’ button.

  • Add product title, description, price and any other info you need.


  • Below the main title of the page, you’ll see different tabs: go to “Options and SKUs” (you can also upload an image and add other details of the product on its respective tab).

  • Here, you can create a new Option Set, o use an existent one. If you click on “Create new Option Set” it will take you to the Product Options page.


  • On this page, click over the “Create an Option” button, where you will be able to choose from SIZE, COLOR, or just create your own set of options.


  • Once you have created your new Option Set, go back to your Product and assign this option set to your product.

  • When your product has an Option Set, 2 new tabs will appear under the Options one: SKUs and Rules.


  • Click on the SKUs tab to create or generate a new SKU for each variation, if needed.

  • Click on the Rules tab to create rules for your variations: for example, the price may change depending on the size of the product, the image of the product may change depending on the color of the product and so on.

  • When done, click “SAVE” and voilà: adding custom options to your product is done.


Now the challenge is how to showcase all this options in a way that doesn't confuse your customer or compromise your shops design. Finding the right way to preview your products is key for selling personalized gifts.


If you are dealing with little amount of personalization options, you can always rely on good product pictures that reflect what your client chose. This works very well if you only allow changes in color, material or patterns.
